A column<\/b> or pillar is a large round support<\/span> with a capital and base and made of stone.\u00a0 A column is a compression member, ie. it is a structural element that transmits, through compression, the weight of the structure above to other structural elements below.\u00a0 Columns frequently support beams or arches.\u00a0 Many columns form part of a wall.\u00a0 A pillar<\/b> is a tall and slender freestanding vertical support often used for decoration.<\/p>\n

A post<\/b> is an upright column or pillar.\u00a0 Generally, in architecture, post and lintel (prop and lintel) refer to a system where a horizontal member (lintel) is supported at its ends by two vertical columns or posts.<\/p>\n

A pier<\/b> is an upright rectangular<\/span> support<\/span> for a structure or superstructure, such as an arch or bridge.\u00a0 The lower portion of a pier may be widened to better distribute the downward pressure of a massive overlying structure.<\/p>\n

A pilaster<\/b> is a slightly projecting rectangular column built into or applied to the face of a wall.\u00a0 A pilaster is an ornamental and structural column.\u00a0 It is an upright architectural member that is rectangular in plan.\u00a0 A pilaster is a rectangular support<\/span> that resembles a flat column.\u00a0 Structurally it is a pier but architecturally it is treated as a column.\u00a0 Pilasters are sometimes used to support fences and gates.\u00a0 They are also used to enclose mailboxes and light fixtures or to hold a planter or an ornament.<\/p>\n

A pedestal<\/b> is an architectural support, or base for a column, statue, vase, or obelisk.\u00a0 Pedestals may be square, octagonal<\/span>, or circular<\/span>.\u00a0 A single pedestal may support a group of columns.\u00a0 Display pedestals showcase art or plants or sculptures.<\/p>\n
