{"id":1763,"date":"2014-09-16T16:31:50","date_gmt":"2014-09-16T16:31:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/waltonsons.com\/wp\/?page_id=1763"},"modified":"2014-10-31T05:24:28","modified_gmt":"2014-10-31T05:24:28","slug":"sandstones","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/waltonsons.com\/?page_id=1763","title":{"rendered":"Sandstones"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>Sandstone rock <\/i>is composed of medium sand particle sizes.\u00a0 Sandstone consists of sand grains that have been cemented together.\u00a0 Sandstones can range from coarse-grained to fine-grained. \u00a0You should be able to distinguish the sand grains with the naked eye.\u00a0 Light-colored sandstones consisting mainly of\u00a0rounded, well-sorted, quartz grains are referred to as mature sandstones or quartz sandstones. \u00a0Sandstones that contain angular grains of several different minerals are referred to as immature sandstones or <i>graywackes<\/i>.\u00a0 Sandstones containing feldspar grains are <i>arkoses<\/i>. \u00a0Sandstones can be white, gray, pink, red, brown, or black.\u00a0 A fresh broken surface of sandstone has a gritty feel.<\/p>\n<p>Sandstone is sometimes known as <i>Arenite<\/i>.\u00a0 It is primarily composed of quartz and\/or feldspar minerals that are cemented together with silica or calcium carbonate. If Sandstone undergoes metamorphism it is transformed into <i>Psammite<\/i>.\u00a0 If it is quartz bearing it becomes quartz-dominated psammite or <i>Quartzite<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>The components of Sandstone:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>Framework grains<\/i> are sand-sized detrital fragments.<\/li>\n<li><i>Matrix <\/i>is very fine material, which is present within interstitial pore space between the framework grains.<\/li>\n<li><i>Cement <\/i>binds the siliclastic framework grains together.<\/li>\n<li><i>Pore space <\/i>includes the open spaces within a rock and is related to the porosity and permeability of the rock.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All sandstones are made up of framework components that include the same minerals:\u00a0 quartz, feldspars, and lithic fragments.\u00a0 The Dott (1964) sandstone classification scheme describes sandstone varieties according to textural variation and grain composition.\u00a0 A supermature sandstone such as Quartz Sandstone has round weathered grains with less clay for the matrix.<\/p>\n<p>Sandstones are grouped as either <i>Arenite<\/i> or <i>Wacke<\/i>, depending on the percent of clay matrix contained between their framework grains.\u00a0 They are also grouped as depending on the percent of the minerals they contain such as <i>Quartz Sandstone<\/i>, <i>Arkose Sandstone<\/i> (with feldspar) and <i>Greywacke Sandstone <\/i>(with an even mixture).<\/p>\n<p>Sandstone has a thin density and is variable from soft to hard depending on clast and cement composition.\u00a0 It is gritty to touch but is available in a variety of surface textures and earth-toned colors.\u00a0 Since sandstone beds often form highly visible cliffs and other topographic features, certain colors of sandstone have been strongly identified with certain regions.\u00a0 Sandstone has good filtering properties.\u00a0 It is very porous and water will penetrate easily.<\/p>\n<p>Sandstone was a popular building material in ancient times and continues to be used for domestic construction and housewares.\u00a0 It is easy to carve because it is relatively soft.\u00a0 Some sandstone varieties are resistant to weathering and are widely used for building and paving material.<\/p>\n<p>Sandstone is quarried around the world.\u00a0 In Scotland, during the Victorian era most of Glasgow\u2019s most impressive buildings were built with red or blond sandstone.\u00a0 In the USA, Colorado supplies a great deal of sandstone, as do many other states.\u00a0 Ohio Sandstone was used to build the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.\u00a0 Seneca sandstone from Maryland was used to build \u201cthe Castle\u201d building of the Smithsonian Institution.\u00a0 Seneca sandstone is also prominent on the floors and the Rotunda doorframes in the US Capitol.<\/p>\n<p>If the sandstone is hard enough, it can be used for dimension stone for buildings and paving.\u00a0 Typically, new sandstone is most often used for high quality custom-designed buildings.
